At Blackwell, we recognize the critical role the design and construction industry plays in addressing the climate crisis, with structural components contributing significantly to embodied carbon emissions. In February 2023, we proudly committed to the SE2050 Program, joining a global initiative to reduce and eventually eliminate embodied carbon in our designs by 2050. As part of this commitment, we aim to integrate carbon-efficient strategies across all project types, from civic centers to single-family residences, while collaborating with clients to achieve shared sustainability goals.

Our approach is rooted in education, innovation, and accountability. Internally, we conduct regular training sessions and knowledge-sharing seminars to equip our team with the tools to quantify and reduce embodied carbon in structural systems. Externally, we use embodied carbon analysis at various project stages to refine designs and minimize environmental impact. Leveraging tools like BIM modeling and a database of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), we provide clients with actionable data to inform decision-making throughout the design process.

Transparency is central to our sustainability efforts. We produce embodied carbon reports for projects, benchmark results, and maintain a lessons-learned register to continuously improve our practices. By sharing insights and collaborating with industry peers, we aim to advocate for and implement sustainable design practices at every level. Our goal is not just to meet the SE2050 targets but to lead by example in creating structures that align with the needs of our clients and the environment.
