Tom Arban

The Centre for Urban Ecology, a center for education and research in environmental sustainability, is located in the heart of the 250-acre Humber Arboretum on Humber College's north campus. Including public and office spaces devoted to showcasing extensive collections and teaching users about protecting and restoring habitat for native plants and animals. The building features sustainable technologies such as passive solar heat recovery and high performance windows, a vegetated roof for storm water management and passive cooling, an on-site biofilter system for treatment of sewage and grey water, a cistern to collect roof water for landscape irrigation, a thermal chimney for passive ventilation in lieu of air conditioning, automatic windows for ventilation, radiant heat flooring, a high-performance mechanical systems, and a shaded outdoor classroom for use in all seasons.
