This project includes the construction of 40 cabins located around the Bigwin Island golf course in Lake of Bays, Ontario. Each cabin features 3 central components arranged uniquely for each building type: a great room with floor to ceiling windows, a cedar-clad bed box, and a hip roof covering the entire assembly. The general cabin design features flush soffits and cantilevered overhangs that are facilitated using intricate wood trusses coupled with supporting beams that have been raised into the soffit. Light gauge steel hardware was used to connect the beams to their supporting columns in order to keep the structure minimal and maximize glazed spaces. In order to minimize the building’s impact on the surrounding landscape, most of the structure is supported on belled concrete footings rather than foundation walls.
